Over the years, the company has evolved through innovation, engineering excellence, and a commitment to quality. Let's explore how the Mitsubishi symbol came to be and what it still represents today.

The Origin of the Three-Diamond Mitsubishi Symbol
In 1870, a young Japanese entrepreneur named Yataro Iwasaki launched the first Mitsubishi company under the name Tsukumo Shokai. Before founding the company, Iwasaki worked for the Tosa Clan and managed many of its business operations.
The Mitsubishi symbol evolved from two family crests. One belonged to the Iwasaki family and featured a three-tiered water chestnut design. The other belonged to the Yamanouchi family of the Tosa Clan and featured a three-leaf oak design.
By combining these two symbols, the iconic three-diamond Mitsubishi emblem was created.
What Does Mitsubishi Mean?
The name Mitsubishi is derived from two Japanese words. "Mitsu" means three, while "hishi" refers to a water chestnut shape often associated with a diamond design.
When spoken together, the pronunciation changes slightly, creating the name Mitsubishi, which is commonly interpreted as "three diamonds."
How Mitsubishi Expanded Beyond Shipping
Mitsubishi began as a shipping company but quickly expanded into many industries. The company invested in mining, shipbuilding, manufacturing, and other sectors as Japan modernized during the late nineteenth century.
By the early twentieth century, Mitsubishi had become one of Japan's most influential industrial organizations.
The Origins of Mitsubishi Motors
Mitsubishi's entry into the automotive industry began in 1917 with the introduction of the Mitsubishi Model A, considered Japan's first series-production passenger automobile.
Throughout the decades that followed, Mitsubishi developed innovative technologies and performance vehicles that helped establish the brand's global reputation.
Mitsubishi Innovation Through the Years
Mitsubishi Motors introduced numerous automotive advancements, including developments in all-wheel drive systems, performance engineering, fuel-efficient engines, hybrid technology, and electric vehicles.
Notable vehicles such as the Lancer Evolution, Eclipse, Outlander, and Outlander PHEV helped cement Mitsubishi's position as a recognized automotive manufacturer around the world.
The Meaning of the Three Diamonds Today
Today, the Mitsubishi logo remains a symbol of innovation, quality, reliability, and continuous improvement. Although the company has evolved over the decades, the iconic three diamonds remain one of the most recognizable automotive symbols in the world.
